Imagination: The Sky's the Limit with Oscar Winner Geoffrey Fletcher

Today, Oscar-winning, Geoffrey Fletcher announced a the Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series competition to find a rising filmmaker.

Geoffrey Fletcher is the first African-American to win an Academy Award for writing. He won the Oscar in 2010 for Best Adapted Screenplay for Precious Based on the novel Push by Sapphire (directed by Lee Daniels starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey) about a young pregnant teen in New York City given a chance to attend an alternative school and escape her abusive environment. Mr. Fletcher has been a intergral piece in many young filmmakers lives as an adjunct professor of film at New York University (his alma mater) and Columbia University.

I sat down with Geoffrey during a luncheon at the Tribeca Film Festival Imagination House in Chelsea. We talked about his journey as a screenwriter, overcoming the frustrations of the day job and the wonderful contributions African-American filmmakers make to the advancement of art.

The Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series is an exclusive series of events and partnerships in collaboration with pioneering creatives. Other series have included book slam Literati-Nightclub in the UK and a multi-sensorial design competition co-curated with the Rebel Dining Society at Shoreditch Studios in East London.

Now in association with Tribeca Film Festival, the Imagination Series is encouraging filmmakers around the world the opportunity to interpret Geoffrey Fletcher’s short film script.

Geoffrey Fletcher chose to work with Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series because he believes the imagination is an incredibly important to life.  He states, "I'm looking forward to the project; from writing the script, to seeing what people do with it, and judging the submissions. I want to see things that I wouldn't have imagined; I want to be inspired by the imagination of others.

Mr. Fletcher is will lead the panel of judges that will select five entrants to produce and direct their film interpretation of the script for a star-studded international premiere in 2013. The Script is now available to on www.imaginationseries.com and budding filmmakers can submit their films, storyboards, etc. starting May 8th, 2012.
